The Land of Fire and Sand: The Unusual Phenomena and Fortune Tellers of Algeria
We are transported to Algeria – the largest country in Africa, where mysticism breathes through the sands of the Sahara and the ancient stones of the Atlas Mountains. Here, magic and prophetic gifts are not a TV show, but a sacred teaching, guarded in Sufi monasteries (zawiyya) and Berber tribes.
1. Sheikh Ahmad al-Alawi (Ahmad al-Alawi, 1869–1934) – The Great Sufi Saint of Mostaganem
Born in the Algerian coastal city of Mostaganem, he is one of the most influential Islamic mystics of the 20th century. His spiritual power was so tangible that he attracted followers even from Europe (including French philosophers and doctors).
The Experience of “Divine Ecstasy”: While still a young man, while practicing solitude and night prayers, he fell into a state of complete dissolution of consciousness (Fana). His contemporaries say that a strong energy was felt around him - with just a glance he could introduce his students into a state of spiritual trance, changing their thinking forever.
Clairvoyant Seeing of Souls: Al-Alawi possessed the gift of “Firasa” (mystical intuition). When a stranger arrived at his monastery, the Sheikh would name his deepest, hidden sins or secret desires, without having seen him before. He predicted to many of his students the exact manner and period in which their earthly journey would end.
2. Sidi Ahmed Tijani (1735–1815) – Prophet of the Desert
Born in Ain Madi, Algeria, he was the founder of the Tijaniyya Order, one of the most powerful mystical brotherhoods in Africa. His tomb in Algeria remains a powerful energy center to this day.
The Mystical Experience at the Abu Samgun Oasis: In 1782, during a retreat in a desert oasis, Tijani experienced his greatest spiritual event. He claimed that the Prophet Muhammad himself appeared to him in a waking state, giving him direct instructions and revealing secret prayers for purifying karma and destiny.
Guided by these visions, he predicted the expansion of his order throughout West Africa and the millions of followers who would embrace his teachings centuries after his death (something that is now a historical fact in Senegal, Morocco, and Mali). He also predicted major political upheavals in North Africa and the decline of Ottoman influence in Algeria.
3. Lalla Zaynab (1850–1904) – The Female Leader of the Desert

An exceptional female mystic and spiritual healer in northern Algeria who led the Sufi monastery in El Hamel after the death of her father, despite attempts by French colonizers and local men to displace her.
Lalla Zaynab spent years in asceticism, fasting, and prayer. She was known for her ability to cure mental and physical ailments through the laying on of hands and the writing of special protective amulets (Hirs).
When French military forces attempted to confiscate the archives and treasures of her monastery, she appeared before them and predicted with absolute accuracy the personal tragedies and military defeats that would befall them if they desecrated the holy site. Her firmness and prophetic fervor frightened the French governor and the army retreated without a fight.
4. The Tuareg Clairvoyants – Lalla Hedda and the Magic of Imohag
In the deep south of Algeria, among the Ahaggar Mountains, live the Tuareg – the “blue people of the Sahara”. In their matriarchal society, women are the guardians of mystical knowledge. Lalla Hedda is a legendary name from the 20th century in the Tamanrasset region.
The Method of Divination (Issedjen): She practiced divination by listening to the spirits of the desert at night and throwing camel bones on the sand.
Lalla Hedda became famous among the nomads for predicting the exact places where the rare but saving rains would fall in the Sahara weeks before they happened. She successfully warned caravans of hidden ambushes by bandits and predicted the discovery of great underground riches (oil and gas) in the Algerian desert, describing them as "black rivers that will change the land of our ancestors."
