Important clarification: The "pine honey" found in Bulgaria is technically not bee honey. It is an elixir made from pine shoots (young pine tips) boiled with sugar or infused with honey. True pine bee honey does exist (a type of honeydew honey), but it is dark and rare, whereas classic "pine honey" is a homemade medicinal syrup.
Health benefits
Thanks to the essential oils and resinous substances in pine shoots, this product is one of the most powerful natural remedies for the respiratory system:
* For respiratory diseases: Acts as an expectorant, thins bronchial secretions, and facilitates their removal from the lungs.
* Relieves coughs: Alleviates dry, irritating coughs and sore throats thanks to its antiseptic properties.
* Immune booster: Rich in Vitamin C, which strengthens the body's resistance against viral infections.
* Antibacterial action: Phytoncides in pine inhibit the development of pathogenic microorganisms in the oral cavity and throat.
* Relieves inflammation: Has a mild anti-inflammatory effect, useful during colds and flu conditions.
How to use
It is primarily applied as a medicinal remedy when needed rather than just as a sweetener:
* For adults: 1 tablespoon 3 times daily, 30 minutes before meals.
* For children (over 3 years): 1 teaspoon 3 times daily.
* Direct intake: Most effective when taken on its own – hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing to soothe the throat mucosa.
* In drinks: Can be added to lukewarm tea (herbal or black), but again – the temperature must be below 40°C to preserve the active substances from the pine shoots.
Important: Pine syrup contains essential oils, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. It is not recommended for people with asthma, chronic kidney diseases, or infants.
